New Protective Hive Insulation Technology How Nansulate® Bee Protect was developed. We begin with the need for a solution to an alarming development that began in 2006 in the beekeeping industry. This phenomenon was termed Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) and for the last two years has been the key topic for beekeepers and those involved with key pollination dependent crops. The issue has been under study, but as yet no decisive cause or solution has been found. Finding a Solution
Beehive Hawaii started research two years ago in response to drastic bee mortality rates and population decline. They sell whole hives of bees, so it is vital that their bees arrive healthy. Their thought was to begin with the bees' home – the hive. Bees spend a great percentage of their time in the hive, so creating a healthier home environment was a logical place to begin. Through their research, they found Industrial Nanotech and our technology, and began to explore how coating the exterior, tops and bottoms of the hives with our insulation technology would affect the bees, and whether they would see an improvement. Long-term field trials were held in Hawaii, Tennessee, Alabama, Arizona, and Ohio. The side by side results were dramatic difference in bee health, and increased bee production in the Nansulate® Bee Protect insulated hives. Amazingly, inspections of their Tennessee hives showed no disease, while only 9 miles away inspected hives exposed to the same environment showed presence of disease. Specific differences that were seen between protected hives and unprotected hives were:
Why does Nansulate® Bee Protect help?
Nansulate® Bee Protect insulation coating on the hives provides not one but many interconnected benefits which contribute to overall improved bee health. Temperature control and air flow: During warm weather bees vibrate their wings to assist in keeping cool and to aid air flow through the hive. During cold weather, bees cluster and also use their energy to keep warm. Temperature regulation by the insulation helps keep the energy levels of the bees higher, because they don't expend as much energy to stay cool or warm. During the warm months improved air flow was seen as well. Antimicrobial properties: Nansulate Bee Protect is a water-based, low VOC coating. It acts as a protective shield around the hive and protects it from mold, moisture. Protects Hives from Weathering: protect hives from harmful U/V rays, mold, and moisture.
Nansulate® Bee Protect was developed with that exact approach in mind. It provides the combined benefits of reducing thermal fluctuations and creating a breathable and mold resistant coating around the hives.
